about

Aquaserge member known for his many collaborations (Stereolab, Aquaserge, Philippe Katerine, April March, Bertrand Burgalat), Julien Gasc has released three critically acclaimed solo albums, which have earned him a prominent place among cult, divisive and unique artists.

If "Cerf, Biche and Faon" took the form of a diary and "Kiss Me, You Fool!" that of a collection of fictions, "L'Appel de la Forêt" closes this trilogy in a tender and spontaneous dialogue, approaching the present with clear-sightedness.

On "Serpentes"Julien Gasc pays tribute to his Brazilian music idols and performs in French songs by Ivan Lins, Chico Buarque and Beto Guedes.

"One might think that it is an easy business to adapt a song, do a cover. But it is something that has to do with flirting, stealing, superficiality. Well, in other words, for me it is a cultural thing; actually it is a story that started with Aquaserge, when our record company at the time, Manimal Vinyl Records, asked us two years in a row to cover The Cure and David Bowie. We thought: let's adapt them and sing them in French. Since then we have continued to make, record, adapt and re-orchestrate covers of songs we loved in the studio and for our live shows. Personally, I've been passionate about Brazilian music since I was a kid, I fell in love with the music of João Gilberto while listening to a radio show on France Inter, his writing touched me deeply and since then and to this day I have kept on looking for and discovering more and more Brazilian music.

When I toured solo to promote my first album "Cerf, Biche Et Faon", I covered songs from Brazilian popular music - from people like Marcos Valle, Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, Gal Costa - choosing which cover to play at the last minute on stage according to the public, the place and the mood. Since then I have continued this process solo and with the Gasc Band.
I made this record because I am in love with these three songs and the messages they convey, I wanted to sing them in French so that the francophone community who doesn't understand Brazilian Portuguese could get a grasp of what is said. It is an evocation of an elsewhere, of mysteries, of another culture. The translations I made of the three songs might give at times a certain naïve and disconcerting feel, in fact it is practically impossible to express the poetic depth of one language into another, Brazilian poetry being so incredibly rich and beautiful. My friends Sebastian Trihan and Dìlia Brito helped me with some of the verses and images of these songs.

Regarding the recording, we took advantage of the last Gasc Band mini tour in England in January 2018 to spend three days recording at Wilton Way Studio in London.
We recorded one song a day live in the control room, Cédric Monzali drumming away in the cabin, cracking jokes between takes, Harry Stevenson at the Pedal Steel Guitar playing two meters from the piano on which I played, Syd Kemp recording the bass close to the Neve console where Vincent Hivert helped us do the engineering on "Entre toi et moi" and "The fear of loving is the fear of being free". Milia Colombani recorded her cello parts immediately after and Laetitia Sadier did the backing vocals for "Entre toi et moi".
The third song, "Tatouage", was recorded just with Syd on a multitrack tape recorder, we recorded the song from beginning to end on just four tracks, on it I play organ, double bass, I sing and play piano.

Since then the project got shelved. But then I had Syd Kemp on the phone last week and asked him if it would be possible to finish the job and mix these three songs remotely - going back and forth. He took the opportunity to record some overdub parts with musicians from HaHa Sounds Collective, we can hear the saxophones of Nathan Pigott, the backing vocals of Victoria Hamblett and the vibraphone of Milan Monk recorded at his home in Australia.

We are like snakes; we must continue to move freely on or under the ground, in our bodies or in the air."

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
